From its inception, the Food Bank has distributed food around both Islamic and secular holidays. Every family should be able to celebrate and enjoy filling and delicious meals at these special times as well as year-round. Ramadan Food Packages Ramadan is a sacred month for the 1.8 billion Muslims across the world. Those who are able must fast from dawn to dusk. Many Muslims try to make the most of this month of blessings with additional prayers, charitable giving, and service. The month culminates with Eid al-Fitr (Feast of the Breaking of the Fast), a major holiday celebrated with food, family, and fun. The Ramadan Food Packages program originated with our intent to ensure that local Muslim and refugee families in need can observe this blessed month alongside the rest of the community. A Ramadan Food Package includes two boxes of grocery staples – such as dates, rice, cooking oil, teabags, and canned vegetables – as well as fresh chicken. Each Package is designed to feed a family of four for up to two weeks. We work with area mosques to ensure that all local Muslims in need have the opportunity to benefit from this program. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “He who provides a fasting person something with which to break his fast then will earn the same reward as the one who was observing the fast, without diminishing in any way the reward of the latter.” (At-Tirmidhi) Eid al-Adha Program Eid al-Adha (Feast of the Sacrifice) is the second major Islamic holiday. It commemorates the example of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him), who was ordered by God to sacrifice his son, Ismail (peace be upon him). Due to God’s mercy, a ram appeared instead and Ismail was saved. If they are able, Muslims are obligated to sacrifice a lamb or goat and share the meat with others, including those in need. The sacrifice is known as udhiyya or qurbani. The Eid al-Adha giving program was the first formal, annual program of the Islamic Food Bank. In 2008, Muslim leaders noticed that many people donated money to complete the sacrifice overseas. They wanted to offer an option to help locally, knowing that this may be the only time of year that area families in need could receive fresh meat as a protein source. IFB works with a Muslim slaughterhouse that completes the sacrifices in the name of those who donate to the program. The fresh meat is distributed along with boxes of culturally appropriate grocery staples (e.g. rice, lentils, vermicelli noodles, chickpeas, canned vegetables, etc.) to families in need. Our collaboration with local mosques ensures that we can meet the need of all local Muslims who may need assistance. Thanksgiving Holiday Boxes Like all Americans, Muslims enjoy sitting down to a delicious meal while giving thanks for their blessings. The Food Bank provides holiday boxes via our community partners to ensure that families across northwest Ohio can celebrate Thanksgiving. In the early years, turkeys were provided to families via our collaboration with SeaGate Food Bank. Now, IFB provides turkey breast plus boxes of holiday side-dish ingredients such as mashed potatoes, green beans, cranberry sauce, and more as part of United for the Holidays with the United Way of Greater Toledo.
